Very Fun Event For You To Attend

First, a reminder I'm reading at Women and Children First Bookstore (5233 N. Clark St., Chicago) next Thursday the 17th at 7:30 pm. Click here to view a flier for the reading. Four contributors to "And Baby Makes More: Known Donors, Queer Parents, and Our Unexpected Families" are reading essay excerpts.

Additionally, Windy City Times is running my guest essay about known donor matters for in this week's issue. You can read that essay here.

Plus Amy Matheny interviewed me for WCT's Windy City Queercast and you can listen to that interview here. The interview starts just under half-way into the show.

I hope you'll join us Thursday at Women and Children First. There will be a book give away and a question/answer session. I know—WHOA—is that cool.

Plan C

Looking ahead to 2009, I need to consolidate and focus. My numero uno writing goal for 2009 is to have my novel manuscript ready to shop to agents by late spring. To that end, I will no longer blog daily. However, when I do blog, my entries will probably be longer, funnier and overall a better reward to you, my readers.

I know there are a few of you regulars out there, so please feel free to click "Subscribe to: Posts (Atom)" at the bottom of this page and you'll automatically be notified when there is a posting.

I miss you already! Have a great holiday.

It's A Mary Monday

OK two things—both relating to me, me, me, me.

First is a business card and banner I designed for Angela Bowman's blog Nest, a resource for folks dedicated to sustainable homes, just launched yesterday.

Second, I just learned my essay The D Word will appear in the anthology "Dyke Moms, Donor Dads, and Reconceiving the Queer Family," coming out in Fall 2009 from Insomniac Press.

Fourth Is The New First

Not really, it isn't at all. But I placed fourth in a First Chapter of a Novel contest for the first chapter of my (in process) novel, The Second Whack. Synposis as follows:

15 year-old Annabelle Macalester is obsessed with the identity of her anonymous sperm donor and, unbeknownst to her two moms, tracks him down over the Internet. But when an altercation with a drug-crazed neighbor leaves the neighbor dead and Annabelle facing murder charges, Annabelle learns more about identity, family and belonging than she bargained for.

There were 142 entries, so I am pretty stoked. You can read my chapter and the other four winners' chapters at Writing Show's web site.

Growing Fast

The 2008 Inc. 5,000 Fastest Growing Private Companies In America went live yesterday. From dog biscuit makers to nanoscope manufacturers, the site has a short profile, based on interviews with the CEOs, of each of the 5,000 companies. There are also feature articles and slide shows such as The Top 10 Woman Owned Companies and When The Boss Is An Adrenaline Junkie. It's pretty inspiring, especially if you are entrepeneurially minded. I contributed 55 of the 5,000 profiles—and had a blast working on the project.

Hip Mama

I'm thrilled to announce my story "Over A Barrel" has been accepted for publication in the Summer 2008 issue of Hip Mama. It's the story of an ongoing battle with my in-laws over eating at Cracker Barrel.
